engineering jobs : General Engineer / Physical Scientist
About the Job
The incumbent will perform studies of fossil energy conversion systems and competing systems in support of the U.S. Department of Energy’s goal to ensure that our nation can continue to rely on clean, affordable energy from our domestic fossil fuel resources. Fossil energy systems of interest will feature technologies related to gasification, combustion, fuel cells, turbo-machinery, coal liquefaction, gas separation/purification, and environmental controls; however nuclear and renewable energy technologies will also be studied.
The incumbent will be required to assess advanced technology components, including comparison of their potential cost and performance to that of state-of-the art alternatives and identification of process conditions and performance targets to guide associated research and development. The incumbent will be required to synthesize configurations for novel energy conversion processes, identify associated process integration issues, and model the system’s overall techno-economic and environmental performance. The incumbent will be required to estimate the capital and operating cost of energy conversion components and systems and analyze economic feasibility based on engineering economics principles.
The incumbent will be required to assess the impact of policy options on technology development and deployment and provide techno-economic appraisals of existing and proposed scenarios for U.S. fossil energy supply, delivery, and use.
The incumbent will be required to support research and development programs with life-cycle analysis, strategic planning and trend analysis.
